Story from the WKRN (Channel 2) web site:

There’s also coverage in The Chronicle:

Mt. Juliet Mayor Linda Elam, the “pistol-packing mama,” said she had originally wanted to separate the various areas covered in the new law, but that wasn’t possible to do with the way it is written. She said for her it was “a pretty easy decision,” and she thinks guns should have been allowed in state parks for a long time.

Commissioners voted 3 – 2 for Mt. Juliet to not opt out of the new law, with Floyd, Hagerty and Elam voting against the ordinance and Bradshaw and Sellers voting in favor of the ordinance to opt out.

I have lived in this community nearly three decades and have seen many 3-2 votes of the Mt. Juliet City Commission. But I have to admit being very surprised that one occurred on a second amendment issue.

Thank goodness we still have three people on the board who have read and understand the Bill of Rights.

Bobby, you are being way, way too generous. Just because we have a three-two vote on the second amendment issue when it was clear the overwhelming majority of the people in this city were against opting out doesn’t mean we have three people who have read and understand the Bill of Rights. It simply means we have three people who understand that one law abiding citizen carrying a gun and one criminal carrying a gun is better than just one criminal carrying a gun.

This was the logical choice although I too am surprised. “Pistol Packing Mama” indeed. Did she really say that or is Tomi having too much fun?

It was a phrase that was actually used. I am not sure if the mayor said it or the man who owns the reloader’s bench. But after it was said the mayor did refer to herself that way.
